Nowhere to go this weekend? There's no need to make a long drive or
fly to an island to spend a quality break of rest and fun. Recently, Outrigger joined a tour of Quezon City curated by Microtel by Wyndham Technohub, revealing several interesting activities you may want to try when you're around northern Metro Manila:
1. Team building at Mystery Manila
Recommended for group activity, Mystery Manila will test teamwork, strategy, and the team’s will to survive. With four mystery rooms to choose, the group will be tasked to solve the mystery and find their way out.
2. Biking in UP Diliman
Many regard the University of the Philippines-Diliman's green space as an escape from cosmopolitan Metro Manila. It is one of the best and safest places to enjoy riding a bike, too.
UP Bike Share, a non-profit
advocacy group of undergraduate students, provides free use of 28 red-and-white
painted bikes for some 50 dormitory students to provide better transportation
for the UP community.
Student just need to sign up for UP Bike Share, and they can then use any of its bike
units for the whole semester, parked in designated bike racks or stations on
campus to travel to their next destination quickly and efficiently. The group
pooled their resources and purchased 10 surplus Japanese bikes and solicited 20
more from generous corporate sponsors to begin their project.
“When you’re on a bike, you see the
city differently. You see your surroundings differently. You’re no longer in
this artificial environment where you’re breathing air-conditioned air and
you’re seeing the city through windows. And we believe that this will make
people care more, because you care more about the air that you breathe, the
scenery that you see,” says Miguel Laperal, one of the founders.
During weekends and holidays, the
bikes are available for visitors use including the helmet. There's no rental fee but donations sre
welcome.
3. Learn to garden at the Quezon City Memorial Circle
The Quezon City Memorial Circle is one of the most underrated landmarks in the city. You will be amazed on what you can see inside such as an organic garden in an isolated side of the Circle. Free lessons on
fertilizer-making, ecowaste management, composting, and organic farming workshop can be availed here.
4. Pay tribute to Quezon City’s founding father
Did you know that the Quezon City Memorial Circle's trylon monument was built 66 meters tall in respect to former President Manual L. Quezon's age when he died of tuberculosis?
You'll learn more about the late president inside the Manuel L. Quezon Heritage House. Transported this year (2016) from its original location, the reconstructed edifice features memorabilia of the Commonwealth leader.
5. Visit QCX
QCX is by far the most high-tech in Quezon City, showcasing its development and history of Quezon City from conception to visions of the future.
Each of the 16 galleries have computers and tablets that contain information about sections of QCX. Some of the rooms even have Xbox
with sensors, bringing you back through time along old city streets or in the heat of World War II. -Text and photos by Christine Soriano
